How to Apply 

We encourage you to apply! Our best applicants are those who meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 or better
  • United States citizens, nationals, or permanent residents
  • Commitment to become an elementary teacher of mathematics or science in a Title-I school district two years for every year of scholarship funding

Do You Qualify? 

  • Students who currently have a minimum of 30 credits and are interested in exploring elementary teaching as a career are eligible to be considered for WITS undergraduate internships
  • Students who are currently UWYO undergraduate juniors and seniors majoring in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) fields are eligible to be considered for WITS undergraduate scholarships. 
  • Transfer students from 2-year colleges who majored in STEM fields are also eligible for WITS scholarships
  • Graduates from 4-year colleges who majored in a STEM field and want to obtain elementary certification as a post-baccalaureate student are also eligible to apply for WITS scholarships
  • Professionals who hold a bachelor’s degree in a variety of STEM fields (e.g., mathematics, engineering, biology, chemistry, environmental science, etc.) will also be considered for the WITS scholarship

For Undergraduates 

Recipients of WITS scholarships are required to teach at the elementary level for a minimum of two years in a Title-I school district for each year of scholarship received. WITS recipients have eight years to fulfill this requirement. The scholarship becomes repayable, with interest fees, for those who do not complete this requirement. View our tracks here

To be eligible for an undergraduate WITS Scholarship Award, of $12,000/year, prospective applicants must:   
  • Maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Be United States citizens, nationals, or permanent residents
  • Be STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Majors
  • Be a UWYO Junior or Senior

Funds are disbursed through the Financial Aid Office. WITS scholarship recipients are eligible for three years of support. 

To be eligible for an undergraduate WITS Internship with a paid stipend of $1000/summer, prospective applicants must: 
  • Maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Be United States citizens, nationals, or permanent residents
  • Be STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Majors
  • Be a rising sophomore with a minimum of 30 credits 

For Graduates & Professionals 

Additionally, scholarships are available for graduates & professionals seeking to become elementary teachers. For those who already have a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, mathematics or other STEM fields, funds are available to obtain elementary certification. View our tracks here


To be eligible for a Graduate & Professional WITS Scholarship Award of up to $12,000/year, applicants must: 
  • Have earned a bachelor's degree in STEM
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident

Funds are disbursed through the Financial Aid Office.

    The primary goal of the WITS program is to recruit and retain diverse teachers with a background in STEM in order to increase the number of highly qualified teachers.
